Should I jump ship on my career/college ambitions for stability in the future after covid?
I am currently a college student in a Pastry Arts Major. I have a full ride scholarship. I am considering changing majors from that to Graphic Design or Construction. I choose these two because its the only two careers I see myself enjoying. Otherwise before covid had happened I was in line to start a culinary internship at a casino on the Las Vegas strip. But then all that got scrapped and finding a kitchen job has been difficult. No restaurants are hiring and if they are they don't want college students with no experience because they can only work part time. It makes me really wonder what my opportunities are in the future. All I see on the news is the restaurants are closing and or downsizing. Hypothetically the pandemic could end by the end of the summer but I still don't see how the downsizing and closures end until by 2025 then the later half would be recovery for the hospitality industry. On the other hand I always see construction still going on in my city and it makes me jealous to see how it seems to be thriving under these conditions. I could be wrong, but the construction hasn't stopped and been dealing with controversial covid related regulations like restaurants have. Should I hold on to my ambitions with the restaurant industry or jump ship to another trade with stability?

Hi, within a week my mother, grandmother, and brother will be living in Nevada. I'll be living in Kaua'i with my father and beginning my first year at UH Manoa (dorming). I love the islands and can't see myself moving to a place without people and views as beautiful as it is here, so it's gonna be pretty bittersweet once we all part ways. I'm gonna be flying with them to help get them settled down for a couple weeks and fly back, but I have several questions about Las Vegas. People from Hawaii that have visited/moved to Vegas; how was the move? What do you miss about Hawaii (I plan on sending them aloha snacks or spam or whatevah)? What don't you miss? What's the culture like around Henderson? Is it safe around those parts? What tips do you have on dealing with summer heat/dry heat? What kinds of things are there to do besides gambling and casinos? For UNLV, since my brother will be finishing his bachelors, are there lots of opportunities/internships? How is the job market? Is the traffic as bad as Honolulu? Really, anything at all about Las Vegas would help. I've read up on this subreddit through search but these are some questions I wanted to ask more about. Any advice for them would be highly appreciated. Thanks
Hey guys so currently I am a sophomore at Cornell University and thinking about internships in Las Vegas with MGM. Casino management is definitely a career path I’d want to explore. However, my only fear is that since I will be 20 I cannot do much in Vegas and would be lonely because I would just be in my room. I am from NJ so it would be far from my friends and family for the whole summer. So I guess I’m just asking for your thoughts/advice? Will I be bored and lonely with nothing to do other than work? Will I just be stuck in my room? Thanks!
Hey guys. I'm a 25 year old dude looking for a job. I have experience in multiple fields including restaurants(cooking and management, 4-5 years), warehouse/forklift(6 months), welding(currently in school but can stick weld just fine), construction and demolition(1 year), Non Destructive Testing(which is a super niche field not a ton of people know about, but nonetheless I have 2 years experience in wet/dry mag particle, dye pen, visual and some UT testing) and 1 year experience in a front desk position at a hotel. I went to the University of Nevada Las Vegas for a few years and completed an internship at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino there, but did not graduate. I have no criminal record, can pass a drug test, work well with pretty much anyone who isn't a complete degenerate, very punctual and if there is something on the job I don't know, i'm not afraid to ask and learn. I have about twelve billion references. So you are probably asking yourself, "why are you on reddit looking for a job if you are so employable?" Long story short, I have put my application in(and followed up with) multiple places and every single one ends up being another resume in the pile, "we'll contact you" type deal. I'm available Monday - Thursday any time between 6am-5pm, Friday/Saturday/Sunday any time. Full time, part time, doesn't matter(would prefer full, however). I just really need to work right now.
Thinking of transferring... could you offer me your personal perspective on the following?
Hey guys! I currently live in a small (comparatively) town in Utah that is pretty close to Las Vegas (I'm sure a lot of you know what it is already). I was never Mormon, but I got a full ride scholarship and stipend to go to school here, plus my parents have a home out here that I could live in - so I had no expenses, awesome weather, etc. However, the social aspects are really messing with me. I lived in Austin, Texas and then New York City, so I've literally always been in biggenon-religious cities. I am getting so so so sick of feeling ostracized, of having ZERO bars in my town, of being unable to date, of CVS closing at 10pm. It's fucking awful. I have around 2 years left in my degree - a BA in Marketing. I'm interesting in Experiential Marketing and have awesome internship experience - involving "Experience Marketing" with top clubs and bars, famous chefs, etc. Definitely didn't play a huge role, but hey, I was there! I really want to move to Las Vegas. I've toured at UNLV and I know about the sketchy area and everything, but I really like the campus itself, the cost of living, etc. Here are the things I'm most concerned about: 1. Social life: have you been able to make friends? Inside or outside of campus? 2. Work: is it easy to break into working at casinos/clubs if you have experience/good recs? Or is it sort of insular? 3. Dating: with everyone coming and going so quickly, have you been able to keep any sort of dating/relationship life? I miss going out on dates, lol. 4. Going out: How is the nightlife aside from the club scene? What do you usually find yourself doing on the weekends? I like drinking and miss it so I'm sure I'd want to go out like... every weekend for a while. Thanks in advance! :)

Revenge against three sets of people A) wbgs B) wbgs students (certain individuals) C) Purcell students (certain individuals) These people defamed me with a conspiracy theory of putting a bomb in my school, crazy stuff I’m not familiar with these individuals Will never understand their motives But I intend to Conspire against them through exposing them which will include their efforts to conspire against my attempts to expose them It’s all limitless Every conspiracy they try and make affiliated to my name/reputation will be pre empted , sent to the police etc As said I’m not familiar with these people and they’ve caused me a lot of stress I wish only love and happiness for them but they will he 100% exposed Can link to my suicide note which is my very last resort if they continue to denigrate me without just consequences. Might need legal representation. They also made social media posts attributed to my name to further gaslight me Nice All the more motivation to be a better person My social life/$/photos/learning/gym/lifestyle is all on the up (: Leaving my parents house better off then when I came in when I go to university too ❤️ Anyway, this is my life plan 1) do the above revenge , and make my whole conspiracy work like tick tock and dominate the narrative, no tolerance of bs, no backchat , I’m getting justice from those who slandered me. 2) Look at the defamation post I made, I did badly with my grades, luckily I have a solution There’s an LLB Law degree offered by the Open University Which is Basically all online. I’m doing it from student accommodation in London hopefully whilst partying with my London friends. This will take 3 years. Hopefully Will intern with my cousin who works with Legal Services in New York City, and also network with my twitter following, my church community and my friend Aditya for internship opportunities. After my degree, I hope to do an Ma Law at either Cambridge, LSE, Macau , Hong Kong Etc so I’m skilled up in terms of my education I manage most of my relationships/communication through the devil that is social media It’s this huge conspiracy because instead of being an influencer on ig , I’m really woke politically on my twitter, Dennis rodman is my dad and I’m an anarchist, daddy would be proud But yeah, linked my twitter @ online if this matters. I automated a bot on it which shows my future mansion lol. After my Ma Law /Mba/JD /management I would like to locate to Singapore or the States and Practice Law or Work in Real Estate or work with influencers or join the military to then be qualified to be a mercenary etc What is for certain though is im a shameless sycophant My school/uni/online connections etc are engaging in a wild conspiracy We’re running up money together, property, opportunities, education, girls, social life etc you name it It’s a huge conspiracy as said Bigger conspiracy then a wife cheating on her husband and putting it on Reddit. Particular Employment that appeals to me includes: Miami: Dezer Development NYC: JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs, McKinsey, all the law firms on my twitter feed, LA: The Daily Wire Lol Anywhere: Any media organisation, it looks lit, idc what politics Political: Lib Dem/Tory/Labor in the U.K., idc I could be either and be a successful mp if I put my mind to it Anywhere: any property development Forbes 30 and 30 Anywhere that sells yachts fr Las Vegas/Macau: casinos Anywhere in the world: a bank Get experience. Employ people to my social media etc Potentially start my own political advocacy group. Potentially do a JD (Ma) at Harvard/a top 30 law school (school of foreign relations/government) Everything hinges on OU lmao Also interested in Fashion, Commercial Space Mining, Fried Chicken. The apartments I put online? I want one in Switzerland like on my twitter One in Malibu Because it’s all being choked out online You can’t tell me nothin - Kanye Financial Loans? I don’t mind My friends can run it up We could theoretically get unlimited money Pay back borrowed money with interest, keep profit Then borrow more Like Borrow 100 Make 300 Pay back 150 We have 150 Borrow 100 Make 750 Pay back 150 We have 600 *4 scale factor the gang For example A flipping business model Loads of opportunities No conspiracies Just making eachother better Improving eachother ❤️ For motivation; My biggest thing isn’t success per sé It’s about earning societies trust I can be successful as a bitch, and be exposed in the guardian , be ruined and then my suicide note where I reason out my death and what snakes say at my funeral actually bears ground lmao But yeah Must win Ttyl

ADVICE: Australian Needing Advice on Obtaining a Working Visa for University Internships in Las Vegas
G'day Reddit, As per the title, I am a 22 year old Aussie male entering my final year of university (Bachelor of Business, Tourism & Hospitality Management) in 2018. I have to do a University Internship at the end of my degree (November 2018 - Feburary 2019) and I am wanting to do this in Las Vegas as I there are so many great opportunities in the casinos and other tourism/hospitality organisations and establishments there. I have already corresponded with my university internship team and they basically said sort out the green card/working visas and permits needed before you look for a job; as such I'm hitting up Reddit to try and score some advice from people who have done this before or maybe just know the in's and out's of the process and can help me out... any advice is much appreciated, and I'm also gonna be putting a similar post in some other forums like the green card forum and the internship forums. Looking forward to some valuable discussions and also, any Yankees or ex-Aussies that can offer some good advice and maybe live in the Las Vegas area, would be awesome to have some dialogue here and then hang out if and when I do make it. Cheers!
My boyfriend [22M] makes me [22F] feel like an ATM and expects me to pick up any/all of his slack!
Background: Apologies, I don't use Reddit too often so I may mess up my formatting. I'm also using mobile right now. This'll be a long story and I'm not the best at writing. My boyfriend (Mike) and I have been together for around 3 years. We are both chemistry majors and studying hard in college. We don't have that much money, but I try and treat him out and make him happy cause I saved money from my last internship. Around 90% of the time if we go out, I'm the one paying for both of us. Both of us rent a room in a house, along with 2 other room mates. I know he genuinely cares about me, but a lot of the times he inadvertently makes me feel used. Story: Every time before midterms or finals start, I always study way ahead of time cause I hate procrastinating. I always make sure to start studying at least 2 weeks ahead of time. My boyfriend, however, is the complete opposite. Always studies day before, sometimes just studying the night before the test. He also studies on his bed, and constantly falls asleep there. I've always suggested to stop studying on his bed cause it's not productive , but he never listens and then gets angry at me if I don't keep waking him up when he falls asleep. He expects me to walk into his room every 30 minutes and gently wake him up when he studies. The week of midterms, I was done by Wednesday. After I finished all my midterms, my boyfriend had one left on Thursday, a general ed course in ecology. I found out later that he only studied the night before, and he never mentioned to me that his test was in the morning. He overslept until 8:50 AM, the test was at 9:10 AM, so he slammed into my room while I was still asleep and woke me up. He told me to get up, go to my car and drop him off at his class, but never told me why. Just straight up demanded for me to go and drop him off. Since he never mentioned to me before that he had a midterm, I thought he was being lazy again and just didn't want to walk to class (very often). I was still groggy and tired, and I didn't understand why he couldn't go to class himself. I told him "no, just take my car pass (he doesn't have one and just uses mine) and drive to class", cause I was exhausted from all of my tests, and I didn't know it was for a midterm. I also told him that he can ask one of our room mates for a ride if needed, cause they were up and were going to head to school. He stormed off and I was confused why he was so angry. The rest of the day he wouldn't reply to my texts. He came home around 6 PM and just slammed the door to his room. Later on he came into my room and I asked him why he was so upset. I was genuinely confused. He started yelling at me. He said "I told you I had a midterm really really early! Why didn't you just do me a favor and drive me to class?!" I told him I didn't know he had a midterm, which he called bullshit on and that he told me last night. He also said he had kept mentioning it for the past few weeks. I said I never remembered him ever mentioning it to me until now. I also asked why didn't he put on any alarms. Mike completely disregarded me and just kept repeating that he would drop me off if I needed it. He really scared me cause his yelling just got louder and louder so I just apologized to him. Told him I was sorry I was very inconsiderate and said I would try and help out more next time. A few weeks later we went on a trip to Las Vegas. My parents gifted me the suite for my birthday, so I was very thankful I didn't need to pay for that. My boyfriend drove us there, and we soon found our hotel. The next day we were going to go on buffet runs and gambling. We looked up all the good buffets and decided to go to the Wicked Spoon for the day. I paid for both of us, and after the buffet we sort of just walked around. When it was darker, we went to the casinos to play roulette. Since I don't really gamble, I just watched as he played. He lost $20 of his own, and when he still wanted to play, he asked for more money of mine. I gave him another $40, and said that's all I had cause we still had another day in Vegas. He soon lost all of that too, and seemed incredibly annoyed that I stuck to my guns and said I wasn't giving any more money. Later on we went back to the hotel room and he started getting handsy with me. He was drunk from the free casino drinks, and tried to touch me. I wasn't in the mood, and I didn't really didn't want to have sex, so I told him no. I tried to let him down easy, and said I just wasn't feeling up to it today. When I told him that, he started to pout. Literally pout. Crossed his arms, faced away from me, and started to act really cold towards me. He told me to just get ready for bed, cause he wasn't getting any tonight. He said he just wanted for us to have a nice vacation, and that I was ruining it. I started to feel really, really guilty, but still not in the mood, so I tried to compromise and said I could give a blow job instead. To that he just walked into the bathroom and started brushing his teeth and just ignored me. We both went to bed upset. I feel like the rest of the trip was ruined, but I tried to still make it fun. We went out for drinks, buffets, and the chocolate factory the next day. Mike just said one word answers to me wherever we went, and expected for me to pull out my wallet wherever we went. He would walk away from the register when they asked for payment. So it wasn't really a fun trip for me. Which brings us to now. Last night he told me, "I can't say Vegas wasn't objectively fun. But whenever I think of what you did, it feels like a lot of the trip was ruined. I wanted it to be really fun and relaxing for us, but you didn't make it fun at all." That snapped me, Reddit. What did I even do?!?! I felt like I was already at the end of my ropes, so I just went to my room and that's where I am now. Am I really that bad of a girlfriend? Am I not seeing it from his POV and I'm just giving a really biased version of what happened? Tldr: I didn't drop boyfriend off after he overslept for a midterm. We also went on a trip to Las Vegas and he's really upset at me. Am I in the wrong? Edit: Thank you guys for all your replies! I'm going to break up with him tonight. However, it's going to be difficult because I think both of my room mates are out, and Mike has a nasty temper. I'll most likely update tomorrow or when it settles down!

20/m/USA - Worn many different hats, but one hat I haven't worn is the one I want to wear
I know it sounds a bit strange, so some context. WARNING: It's gonna be long haha. I got my first job at 15 as a courtesy clerk at a local grocery store. Here in Las Vegas, it gets HOT (obviously). Like 115 degrees hot. After 4 months (May 2013 to August 2013) wrangling shopping carts in that kind of weather, I left there. I immediately started working as an unpaid intern after that for a comedy show that I took classes in. Selling tickets, advertising in front of the casinos on the strip. Also hot, but a lot better because I ran my own thing. I left that after 3 months (August 2013 to November 2013) While I job hunted, I decided to put some of my education to good use. I studied web design in high school (I went to a magnet school) and worked freelance for a few people. But I hated what I did, so I found some other web designers who were willing to take over the projects and left that behind. (November 2013 to June 2014). I stared to focus more on school. But once I graduated, I needed to start looking for work. My parents own a business (that I have no interest in whatsoever), but money is money, so I would do odd jobs for them whenever. It was more of a quid-pro-quo/allowance in exchange for some tasks done kind of deal. I still have it on my resume as my longest stuck-with job (1 year 5 months). I decided to look elsewhere though, and worked for a week as a host for a little breakfast restaurant on the other side of town (February 2015). I didn't have my own car at the time, and my parents made me quit because I was driving their car and it was about 20 miles away. A week later, I got a job at a car dealership as a salesman (at 18 years old). It was pretty good money, but the management was god-awful (absolutely not exaggerating). One manager would make me buy a brand of cigarettes I didn't smoke with my own money, share a couple with me, then take the whole rest of the pack home at the end of the day. After 3 months there (March 2015 to June 2015), I decided to take the summer off. That August, I got a job at a call center selling stock options to old rich people. I didn't really get that many sales, and they were threatening to layoff those who weren't performing. I decided to leave after 3 months because I was only making $200 a week and the work was soul crushing. (August 2015 to November 2015). I took that time off again to focus on school. At that time, I had switched my major to Political Journalism, and began doing freelance work. However, the more I attended rallies, the more I realized that I wanted to be the one doing the political work. Not reporting on it. So I switched my major again to political science and stopped journalism (November 2015 to March 2016). To make some money on the side, I got a job at a small gelato shop (also on the other side of town, but I had a car, so it was fine). I was laid off after a month because my "scooping wasn't on par with the others" (April 2016). Also the only job I was actually laid off from. A month later, I began another unpaid internship with a fringe candidate running for Senate in the primaries working as a communications staffer. I was only with them for less than a month, before he lost (last place. Bad loss). (May 2016) I took another summer off, and in August 2016, my friend got me a job working at a shoe repair place that he was managing one of the locations for. It was pretty cool and I was making pretty decent money. However, after 3 months, my dad had said he wanted me to start paying rent for me and my girlfriend or get our own place. I told him that getting our own place was impossible on the combined amount that I and my girlfriend were making, so he talked with his friend and was going to get me a better paying job with better hours, but he told me I had to quit my current job right then and there or a) I wouldn't get the new job and b) I would be out of a place to live. So I quit. Didn't even give a 2 week notice. Quit right on the spot (don't worry, I still finished my last day). (August 2016 to November 2016). I interviewed the next day and the guy who owned the company looked like he liked me. However, he had said that he wasn't going to hire anyone until after the new year. But a week before January 1st, I emailed him and was told back that he hired someone 2 weeks prior and did not tell me. So now I've been "f"unemployed since November. I'm trying to get a job in politics. Even the most minor job. Local government stuff. I'd even settle for a cashier job at the rec center. But the problem I run into is that I've had so many different jobs for varying, short amounts of time, that I feel I'm almost unhirable by any job I actually want to do. But I also have to focus on school. I also need money though to pay bills. I feel like I'm in this awful rut. Any advice? TL;DR: I have had a lot of different kinds of jobs in different fields of work, all very short times. Am I unhirable in the field of Politics (of which I want to go into)?
Yes, I'm an executive so I'm in touch with most everything that goes on. Most of the time when I see something like that, I just say "good for us" and try not to think about whether or not the person can afford it or not.
I, obviously, like to think I'm uber classy. But in general I think paycheck cashing promotions are pretty tasteless. E.g., Cash your paycheck and get 5% of the total value in free slot play.
Let's say your check is $1,000. The casino will cash your check and then also give you $50 in promotional credits to be used on the slot machines. The idea is that since we've given you some "free" money to begin playing the machines you will also dip into the $1,000 cash that we also handed you.
No, you get the $1K in cash and the $50 can only be used in the slot machine. I've done this once when I started my new job and my direct deposit wasn't set up yet so they issued me a live check.
I really don't like them so not often unless someone is in town that wants to go. I don't have a moral objection, just think it's a waste. "Hey do you like to eat steak? Give me $20 to smell this delicious steak! No, you can't try it!!!".
So that having been said, I might spend $20 to give to the girls on the stage and maybe a lap dance.
No, I don't get treated better because of my title really. They usually just care about how much money you spend and that's it.
Ummm... Off the top of my head I think the sneakiest thing is probably side bets on table games (e.g., play an extra $5 and if your two cards are a pair then you win $25) because the odds are terrible or things like advertising low table game limits but modifying the rules (e.g., blackjack pays 6:5 vs 3:2) to increase the house advantage.
First, we quantify most everything by "theoretical worth". That is, how much we can expect to win from you based on the house advantage of the game you play and how long you play. The general formula is decisions per hour X house advantage X hours played X average bet. So, $25/hand at blackjack X 1.5% house advantage X 2 hours played X 60 decisions per hour = $45 in theoretical worth.
Second, It really depends on the particular property. The number is a lot higher for Wynn then it would be at Joker's Wild (a really, really dumpy casino on the outskirts of Vegas). That having been said, most places will be very happy to have you if you are in the $150-300 a day in theoretical worth range.
I just threw the 1.5 number out there. We also factor in skill into house advantage so as to be more favorable to the player, comp wise. comp wise we'd probably give you 15% of the $45, or $6.75. That's just in what we call discretionary comps that the pit supervisor or host can give you. Then you could expect another 30% in the mail via free bets, hotel, food, etc.
Well I've worked all over the country and, yes, of course we always keep an eye out on new competition that would impact our existing customer base, especially as the business has seen much more legalization in new jurisdictions in the past 20 years.
For Vegas, I think most strip properties have dealt with this by investing in properties in regional markets so as to send their customers to their Vegas properties so it is pretty accretive. Someone from Harrah's Ak-Chin in the Phoenix area gets offers from Harrah's Las Vegas quite often.
The bigger problem really is for the markets where they were a monopoly for some time and really rested on their laurels. Reno and Atlantic City come to mind. Those markets are dying fast and there really isn't much upside. In Atlantic City, for example, you have casinos buying competitors just to close them so as to reduce the inventory.
I worked as a slot analyst (analyzing machine performance) years ago and never on the floor so I don't know/remember the exact steps. Essentially, though, it's verifying that the machine is functioning properly and recording the details of the jackpot for audit/regulators. If it is a taxable jackpot ( >= $1,200) then we are required to fill out the IRS W2G form to report it to them for tax purposes so at that point we have to get your ID, etc. to facilitate that. Then of course, there is the matter of actually paying you the money, verifying that it is the correct amount, etc. The tax form does get sent to the IRS. You can request the taxes not be taken out of your jackpot as you are only taxed on the net win at the end of the year.
4.) There's a lot of pressure to make money/meet your budget so all of the bullshit that goes along with that. Dealing with politics, having to adjust staffing, etc. And I don't like that at my level the usual tenure is 2-3 years so you move around a lot. I'd like to be more settled, especially in a place I'd really want to live for a long time and I don't feel like I have much control of that in this business.
1.) I mean there is only one of me at every casino so if something happens whether I don't like where I work or what something different (e.g., more money) or they don't like me (shocking, it happens!) then the likelihood that I have to move is high, especially if I'm in a city that only has a handful of casinos. 2.) I obviously feel like my skills could take me anywhere! But in reality, it has been tough to change industries when I've tried. Usually places like hotels don't pay as much as casinos and look for more sales-related skills and restaurants don't really have marketing people except at the corporate office whereas my skills are more analytics-oriented. And both usually pay less than casinos.
The problem with returning to that type of vibe is that it's difficult/impossible given how big the casinos are. Sure it was easy for Benny Binion to control everything and not be "corporate" when the old Horseshoe was literally 1/10th the size of MGM Grand.
I went there for grad school so was older and had a wife and a house. It is definitely a commuter school so there's not a lot of school spirit. I went to undergrad a school with a huge, huge, huge, football program so it was a bit of a change for me. I also didn't find the students to be terribly bright (with exceptions, of course). On the upside, a lot of people like living in Vegas and the Hotel Administration College (where I went) has very, very good brand recognition.
Yes, they hang out at the bars and then there are services you can call and have them sent to your room. If it's overt, casino security will clear them out of the bar area but the vice cops generally focus on human trafficking kind of stuff.
1.) The industry relies heavily on industry experience so job prospects are good if you're willing to start in a low position and work you're way up. If you go to UNLV and get the degree I got and expect for some casino to make you a Director of VP with no experience then you're going to be very disappointed.
3.) Definitely potential opportunity. I've read about that small tribe in Texas. It'll happen eventually in Texas. The people in Louisiana will not be happy, though.
Viable for what? Making consistent money? Then definitely not. If you are entertained by thrill of gambling and have the discretionary funds to do it, then by all means.
My undergrad degree is pretty bland, political science, so it wasn't hard at first. I did my grad degree in casino management because I was living in Vegas, wanted to get an MBA, didn't want to take 2 years off from work to get a full-time degree, didn't have the support of my job to get an executive MBA, and didn't like UNLV's MBA program.
Las Vegas Sands / Venetian is actively trying to kill it (which I don't really understand) but everyone just sees it as a means to make more money so are ready to pounce when it's legal.
1.) Generally there are poker dealers and table games (e.g., blackjack) dealers. Few do both. Among the table games dealers, most know multiple games as the more you know the more hirable you are. In terms of the qualifications it's just that you've gone to some sort of dealer school (there are commercial ones and some casinos do it in-house), experience, and a live audition. 2.) Really depends on the market and the casino. At the high end like Wynn or Venetian they will do close to $100K/year but at an entry-level place it could be more like $25K/year. It's base salary plus pooled tips (aka tokes).
3.) You've never thought of dealing the WSOP? They need as many dealers as they can find.
Encore and the new Barrymore are definitely designed for the Asian gambler. And you'd, obviously, have to assume the casinos in Macau are, too, although I've never been.
Typical work day is get to work and look at the previous day's financial results and react accordingly. I.e., ask the analysts to pull numbers, talk to the head of a certain department about their opinion on something, etc.
Emails emails emails.
Then it's usually a lot of meetings about upcoming things whether it be planning an event, approving new advertising, doing the strategic planning for the property for 2015, meeting with vendors, etc.
Emails emails emails.
By this time the numbers or reports I've asked to be run are ready so I sit down and look at them and act accordingly (e.g., hey, looks like we're spending too much on postage to mail to customers too far away, let's change the way we do this for next time), etc.
Emails emails emails.
Then it's usually time to go home but 2-3 times a week I'll have a dinner or event to go to with a vendor or colleague or someone from the press.
Emails emails emails.
Probably 2-3 Saturdays a month I'll go in and work for a few hours just to catch up on stuff or if there's an event to meet and greet players, make sure everything is going well, etc.
The masses don't care about either especially if you're able to offer low limits. The limit and the number of decks is what attracts people to a bj game. Still never going to allow counting.
Well certainly there are more what we call "front of house" positions (dealers, porters, servers, bartenders, etc.) than "back of house" positions (accountants, IT, warehouse, etc.) so in terms of pure numbers, yes it's easier to get -any- FOH than -any- BOH position.
That having been said, if you're wanting an IT position shouldn't be too hard if you're willing to work anywhere and have a little experience. If you're wanting to just jump into the CIO job at Bellagio, more difficult.
They aren't. The games have to go through pretty rigorous testing by the state or an agency of the state to be allowed to be sold. Gaming Labs International is one such company.
We definitely do SEO/SEM campaigns but primarily for hotel related keywords for people looking for hotel rooms. I worked at a place a little outside of the main city in the south one time and we'd buy broader search terms for people looking for "entertainment in main city" in case they didn't know there was a casino nearby.
I'd rather not say as I don't want to be outted but I have worked for large publicly traded companies, privately held companies (e.g., owned by hedge funds), and publicly traded companies where one individual owns the majority of the shares. I've never worked at a privately owned casino owned by one individual, though.
From a gambling standpoint, people in that age range like penny slots so we offer a lot of penny slots. We put on shows that would appeal to them. We would make the decor more classic vs hip. Etc.
It really depends more on the manner in which you win and how you behave. We're required by law to fill out a Currency Transaction Report for transactions over $10,000. So if you got to that point you would have already given us your ID, etc. We'd obviously make sure that surveillance is watching you to make sure you're not cheating but if you're on a random hot streak and betting $10K/hand then it wouldn't be a huge deal at most strip properties.
At my place, (which is not an uber classy place like Wynn or Venetian), you'd get pretty much whatever you'd want. Suite, dinners, limo from the airport, show tickets, etc. We'd generally reinvest in you 30% of your loss so just figure out what $3,000 in comps would get you.
As I mentioned in a previous post, I believe you really just need to be tenacious and take anything to get your foot in the door. It's a very crowded field, especially on the what I call "pretty picture" side of marketing. I wish I had a more specific answer to give you.
I usually say I'm in charge of driving profitable revenue. The departments that report up to me are charge of advertising, promotions, entertainment, public relations, direct mail/database marketing, and VIP marketing.
Absolutely. I think most of the major companies have management training/internship programs. Go to their careers websites. Caesars Entertainment, MGM International, Pinnacle Entertainment, Penn National Gaming, etc.
I think the best combination in today's world is to be more right brained with a creative bent as more and more the question asked of marketing folks is "quantify how your idea makes me money?" and less and less "what's the most most creative idea you have?"
It's a crowded field especially on the left brained side (e.g., advertising and public relations) because people think it's "cool". So if that's you're interest, I'd say being tenacious and creative is what is going to get you far in that world because it's tough to get your foot in the door and you have to have thick skin and then when you do get your foot in the door you are going to have a very short leash to prove yourself.
The hotel management program in general is not selective but the casino management program is difficult because it's pretty quantitatively-focused so there's a lot of attrition.
I'm not from here and my ex-wife hated living here thus why she's my ex. My friends and I go and see concerts, go to bars, we like guns so go shooting sometimes, and most Sundays cook for each other.
Doing what, exactly? Just be willing to make not a lot of money for awhile and be willing to relocate frequently if you want to move up the ladder. I guess those are the first things that come to mind.
